Postcard from Nature

(Mallards)

John and I stood watching
the sun rise above the distant trees,
its rays diffused by the morning mists
drifting along the river’s banks
and sparkling over its riffles.

We slid our boat into the water,
disturbing three Mallards.
They turned up river, wary, watchful,
ranting and squawking as they tend to do.
Just a look passed between us,
knowing words would fail the task.
