Above It All

(Golden Eagle)

We returned from our sojourn to the southernmost reaches of Texas and to its wildest west with a treasure trove of photographs. On this trip we visited Big Bend National Park for the very first time and discovered that it must be the sole destination of its own future trip. Expansive and beautiful, we had only time to scratch the surface of its natural wonders.

Along the main park road we climbed to heady altitudes and stopped often for pictures. Near one peak, Becky lined up an amazing shot.

Massive crags glow orange and gold,
framed by their own deep, purple shadows.
They tower above the expanse below
yielding only to weather and time.

Watching, an eagle soars,
caring no more than the clouds that drift by.
All is one.

Months later, during a week of tense and virus-driven news, I thought again about that vision, about its serenity and sublime beauty. I committed to try to capture it, hoping to find some peace in the distraction.
